Laos Currency

Laos official currency is called Kip, issued by the Laos People’s Democratic Republic in 1952. It is a non-convertible currency, which means that it is useless once you left Laos.

The bank notes currently in circulations are 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 20,000, and 100,000 Kip.

The exchange rate is around 8,000 - 9,000 to 1 US$. But US dollar and Thai baht is commonly accepted for many purchase. It is never bad to exchange some Laos kips when you are traveling in Laos. So, make sure you use your kips up or change them back to a currency you can use elsewhere before leaving the country. You can exchange kip on your arrival in the major airports and main ports in Laos. But you should know that the rates are usually lower than those in town. So, if you want the best exchange rate, you can find the money changers near the market who will offer better rates than exchange booths.
