Let’s Start Planning My Trip

1. Shwedagon Pagoda

Considered as the most notable building in Yangon and one of the wonders of the religious world, Shwedagon Pagoda rises 326 feet (99 m) on a hill 168 feet (51 m) above the city. Enjoy a history of 2,500 years old, this structure guards Yangon city with four Buddhas inside. The complex is a solid brick stupa which is plated in gold and the upper dome is studded with precious diamonds and gems, which makes it glistening all the time.

There is a large open ground surrounds the Pagoda where stands hundreds of shrines, pavilions, small stupas, Buddha images, and other objects of devotion. Here you can catch a whole view of the Yangon city. Prayers and devotees come here and walk clockwise around the Pagoda to prayer, meditate or just contemplate. There are four entrances leading to the shrine, and foreign visitors are required to enter from the north gate.

2. Sule Pagoda

Right in the primary traffic center of a busy commercial district stands an important landmark of Yangon. It is believed that the pagoda was built during the time of Buddha Guatama which means it is more than 2,500 years old. In Myanmar word, Sule means “meeting”. If you have a little understanding of Myanmar’s history, you will notice that all roads, life and important events would meet here.

Sule Pagoda is a typical structure with a dome, just like the other stupa found in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. And there are always minor stupas, bronze bells, and shrines containing Buddha images surrounding the main Pagoda. There are eight Buddha images representing each day of the week (Wednesday represents two days), and you can pay homage to your birthday Buddha (the day of the week on which you were born).

Opening Hours: Daily from 04:00 - 22:00

3. Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda

Located just a short distance northeast of Shwedagon, this Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda houses a beautiful reclining Buddha image with a length of 65 meters and a height of 16 meters. The statue’s porcelain face is topped by a crown studded with precious diamonds and stones and features the amazing large eyes which are made from special Japanese glass, vermillon lips and bright blue eye shadow.

As other pagodas found in other cities and countries, the statue is surrounded by small shrines which are devoted to Buddhas of each day of the week. Visitors come here, usually will pay homage to the main Buddha with offerings of flowers and candles and then find and worship their birthday Buddha.

Opening Hours: 06:00 - 20:00 daily

Kandawgyi Lake or the Royal Lake is a artificial lake covering an area of 150 acres. It is originally built for a reservoir by the British and now is a popular attraction in Yangon.
