1. Forbidden City

The Forbidden City is the largest and best-preserved imperial palace complex in the world which was built between 1406 and 1420 by Emperor Yongle. Since then, it served as the residence of 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

It covers an area of about 72 hectares and consists of 90 palaces and courtyards, 980 buildings and more than 9,000 rooms.In order to protect the emperors who live here, the Forbidden City is enclosed by a 10-meter-high defensive wall, which has a circumference of 3, 430 meters. And there is a moat around the city as the first line of defense. It is suggested to have a guide accompany you to visit the palace. So you can have a better understanding about the history of the forbidden city.

2. Tiananmen Square

There is no doubt that Tiananmen Square serves the symbol of Beijing and even the whole China. As the largest central city square in the world, Tiananmen Square covers 440,000 square meters and can hold aout one million people for celebration and gatherings. On the north of the square is the Tiananmen, the Gate of Heaven Peace; on the west is the Great Hall of the People where the national people’s congress of the People's Republic of China is held every year; on the east is the National Museum of China and on the south is the monument to the great heroes and Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum.

When visit the Square, you can climbe the Tiananmen Rostrum where Chairman Mao proclaimed the establishment of the People's Republic of China. Attending the national flag raising and lowering ceremony is well worth watching.

3. Temple of Heaven

Located in the southern part of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is the largest existing masterpiece among China’s ancient royal sacrificial buildings. Built in 1420 by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty, the Temple of Heaven was enlarged and rebuilt during the reigns of the Ming emperor Jiajing and the Qing emperor Qianlong. It was originally built as a holy place for the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties to held Heaven Worship ceremony.

It is larger than the Forbidden City, which covers an area of 2,700,000 square meters. The temple is enclosed by a long wall. The northern part within the wall is semicircular symbolizing the heavens and the southern part is square symbolizing the earth. Come in the early morning, you will see groups of peopel practicing all types of Kung Fu and Taichi.

4. Great Wall

The famous Great Wall in China is one of the greatest wonders of the world. In 1987, it was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO. The total length of the Great Wall is approximately 8,851.8 kilometers, about 5,500 miles, winding up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus.

The Great Wall was originally built in the Spring and Autumn period and undertaken constant extensions and repairs in later dynasties. It was the Emperor Qin Shihuang who had the wall joined together to fend the invasions from the Huns in the north, which made the wall great. There are major eight sections including Badaling, Juyongguan, Huanghuacheng, Jiankou, Mutianyu and so on with about 600 kilometers snaking across Beijing. Hiking one of the section of the Great Wall is almost a must-do activity if touring Beijing.
