From a traveler's point of view, Yangon and Mandalay are principal international airports in Myanmar. Of the two, the former receives the majority of international flights. As for the latter, it offers convenient proximity to Burma's main tourist points of interest, such as Old Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake.
As for the airport in Naypyidaw, it serves the new capital of Myanmar. Note that top tourist attractions of this Southeast Asian nation are nowhere nearby. Hence, it is business travelers, aside from the Burmese residents, who might find this airport of use.

International Airports in Yangon
Yangon Airport is the principal Myanmar gateway for international flights. Most foreign visitors come to and leave Burma via this airline hub. The main reason is that it handles more international flights than Mandalay and Naypyidaw combined.
Besides international, the airport serves domestic flights, too. Consequently, Yangon Airport has two terminals – International and Domestic. The distance between those is easy to cover on foot.
Yangon Airport
The approximate distance between the airline hub and the city of Yangon is 10km/6.2mi. The most convenient transfer option between the city and the airport is by taxi service. The price is around $6, payable in local currency.
The airport features basic facilities, such as money exchange offices, eateries, and several shops. If you need to wait to catch a connecting flight, there are a few lounges where you can relax, read, and make use of wireless internet.
Note that you can fly to Yangon Airport only via destinations in East and Southeast Asia. Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Seoul are some destinations where you can catch a flight. Doha and Dubai in the UAE are the only non-Asian cities maintaining regular flights to Yangon.
So, if you travel to Myanmar from Europe, the Americas, or any other continent, you need to take connecting flights.
International Airports in Mandalay
Mandalay is the most modern and, considering its passenger capacity, the largest airport in Burma. Despite its potential, however, this airport still lags behind Yangon, the major international airline hub of Myanmar.
You can fly from several East and Southeast Asian destinations to Mandalay directly. Some of the most important ones to travelers are Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Guangzhou, and Taipei. A few Burmese cities maintaining direct flight lines to the former royal capital are Yangon, Naypyidaw, Thandwe (Ngapali Beach), and Nyuang-u (Old Bagan).
Mandalay Airport
Mandalay Airport has various useful facilities, including eateries, kiosks, convenience stores, lounges, and duty-free shops. ATMs and currency exchange are available, too. You can use the airport's Wi-Fi for two hours.
The distance between the international airport and the city of Mandalay is roughly 35km/20mi. Bus and taxi are the main transportation options between these points of interest. The cost of the transfer by an air-conditioned taxi is approx. $10, while the price of a shared taxi is nearly $3.
International Airports in Naypyidaw
Naypyidaw is the third major airline hub in Myanmar. Introduced relatively recently, Naypyidaw Airport receives domestic flights for the most part. Bangkok, alongside a number of cities in China, is virtually the only significant international airline gateway from where you can fly to the capital of Myanmar.
As a traveler, you may only consider a flight to Naypyidaw if you wish to visit Inle Lake or Old Bagan. Besides an occasional traveler, only residents of Myanmar use the airport to reach their destinations.
Naypyidaw Airport
The capital city of Burma is a short ride away. Taxis, which charge up to $15 for a journey, are the main transfer option from Naypyidaw to the airport.
Coffee shops and prayer rooms are some facilities you can make use of at the Naypyidaw Airport.
Myanmar Airports Tips for Foreign Visitors
If a favorable wind, or a planned trip, takes you to Myanmar (Burma), you could surely do with several useful tips.
•When you hire a taxi to get to the Naypyidaw city, try your bargaining skills. That way, you may lower the fare of a transfer well below $15.
•When heading from or to Yangon, consider making use of the red and white shuttle bus commuting between the railway station and the airport. The bus covers areas of interest to travelers and is an exceptional option for budget travelers without a lot of luggage. One-way ticket costs less than $0.5, but the bus is usually full.
•Flight times between local destinations in Myanmar aren't long. But, journeys involving connecting flights tend to last long, even over a day. So, plan an itinerary that includes stays at respective destinations before proceeding further.
•When exchanging money at the Myanmar airports (specifically Yangon), you may receive more favorable rates when changing a higher amount.
•Even major airports in Myanmar are small by international standards. Hence, you don't need to arrive well before the scheduled flight. Getting there two hours in advance is usually more than enough.
•Mandalay International Airport is a favorite stop for low-cost airlines flying from Southeast Asia. For example, you can get there from Bangkok's Don Mueang and Singapore's Changi airline gateways.
•The nearest airport to Bagan serving domestic flights is Nyaung-u. If you fly to Inle Lake, buy a ticket to Heho.
•The principal local airlines operating in Myanmar are Air Mandalay, Air Bagan, Yangon Airways, and Myanmar Airways. Of these, Myanmar Airways offers the most favorable deals but provides basic service.
Summary
Getting from one destination to another in Myanmar is best by airplane unless your final destination is several hours by car or bus away. Road conditions in Burma are generally poor, and they may additionally deteriorate during heavy rains.
Therefore, covering long distances in Myanmar by vehicle is inconvenient at best.
This Southeast Asian country features a developed network of airports and relatively frequent departures. Thus, traveling between distant points of interest by airplane is the best option here by a long shot.
