1. Wat Chedi Luang

As one of the most important and prestigious temple in Chiang Mai, Wat Chedi Luang was built in 1401 with a height of 80 meters. However it was damaged during an earthquake in 1545 with its nearly half height reduced. After a restoration was financed by UNESCO and the Japanese government in the 1990s, it regained its remarkable appearance in the past.

There are several structures which play a great role in the culture, including the city pillar, main temple housing the Buddha image and a huge gum tree on the left of the entrance. As the legend says, if the great gum tree falls down, the great city will follow.

Evening candle procession will be hold by the worshipers when important Buddhist holidays happen.

2. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Wat Doi Suthep is located at the highest peak in one of the national parks in Thailand where you will have a chance to overlook the city on a clear day from the northwest. It is considered as one of the most sacred temples in the north. There are statues of two demons guarding the entrance to the temple precinct and only two of the six gates can lead to the gallery. Around the temple scattered various statues depicting the legendary white elephant, dragons, gods and Buddhas of the Thai religion.

You can reach the temple by hiking up the mountain through a 306-step staircase, which is considered as an act of meditation. Or you can rent a motorbikes or hop into a songthaew. It is better for you to dress properly to enter the temple with your legs and shoulders covered.

3. Wat Phra Singh

Wat Phra Singh is a large complex attracting pilgrims and visitors for its various Buddha and its Lanna art and architecture. Within the complex, full of old trees, old bits, new bits, worshiping halls in Lanna-style, a prestigious Buddha image, a reclining Buddha, jade Buddha and gold Buddhas. It is said that this temple is built by the Lanna King Pha Vu during mid-14 century, in order to house his father’s ashes.

There houses viharn where Buddha images are located, a large prayer hall, a library in Lanna-style and a main stupa. The viharn is in good condition due to the recent renovation, but the interior murals are badly damaged. The main stupa is large enough to surprise you but with a bad decoration.

4. Sunday Walking Street

Every Sunday, old city's central avenues are closed to traffic and become a long street bazaar stretching about 25 meters. It is a must-go for eating and shopping. Here you will find vendors selling handcrafted lamps, dolls, soaps, jewelry, clothes, Christmas ornaments, local handicrafts and other things beyond your imagination.

There are temples lining with the street where you can find the usual range of Thai snacks and drinks. The market usually opens late evening and will get extremely busy after 18:00 or 19:00. If you can’t stand the crowds, come earlier. If you are interested in shopping and eating, this market is really worth wandering foe several hours.
