Common Questions about Myanmar Family Tour

1. What to do and see during a Myanmar family tour?

To make sure that every family member enjoy the trip, there are some family-friendly ways offered to explore Myanmar.

In Yangon, spend half a day to take the circular train ride. It is an old-school train that you can hardly see in big and modern cities.

In Bagan, rise up early to cruise the sky above Bagan plain on a hot air balloon. While touring the thousands of temples here, you can rent a bicycle or horse cart. That should be able to amuse both of you and your kids.

When you are in the Inle area, take a day trip on Inle Lake with a long-tail boat, which gives you a glimpse of the unique lifestyle in Southeast Asia.

The journey in Kalaw offers you a chance to get in close touch with Asia elephants at Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp. Your kids should be willing to feed and bathe the lovely elephants here.

You can also head to the south of Burma for a few days’ of relax on the still-completely-unspoiled white sandy beach, which is always a heaven for kids!

2. How many days are required for a Myanmar family tour?

It depends on where you go and what to do in Myanmar. The followings are some popular itinerary examples for your reference.

A classic Myanmar family tour takes 9 days, starting from Yangon, heading to Bagan, Kalaw and Inle Lake, and finally getting back to Yangon.

For kids who are interested in hike and trek, a 2-day trekking experience is recommended to add to your travel plan. From Kalaw, you hike to Samkar through Saung Khar and finally get to Inle Lake.

If you want to go to a beach area to relax, you need 10 to 12 days. Two options are available. You can begin your trip from Yangon, then go to Bagan and Inle Lake, and finally, head for Ngapali beach. Or after exploring Yangon, you go to Kalaw and Inle Lake, then transfer to Bagan and eventually get to Ngapali.

If you have a very limited time budget, you can head to Bagan for a special adventure. And to fully explore the plain, you need at least 4 days.

3. Is it easy to get around Myanmar with kids?

The truth is that the straight forward journey between cities can take a very long time, sometimes even up to 9 hours. Therefore, getting around Myanmar by bus or taxi is not recommended for a family with kids.

To ensure your Myanmar family holidays as smooth as possible, you'd better travel around the country by plane. This saves your time as well as satisfies your wriggling children.

For short distances, you can take a bus or taxi. Bus transfer is cheap but time-consuming, while taxis can be fast but cost-effective. However, getting around by foot turns out to be the quickest option when you are in traffic jams in cities or smaller towns.

4. What should you pack for a Myanmar family tour?

US dollars are the most widely accepted foreign currency in Myanmar. So prepare some crisp US dollars for exchange in case that some ATMs fail to work.

The best time to travel Myanmar is in the winter season between November to February. With moderate daytime temperatures and cool night temperatures, you need bring jumpers or hoodies to layer up your clothing.

More essential items should be packed, including your passport with a validity of at least 6 months, Myanmar visa, travel insurance, waterproof phone case, power adapter, portable power bank, insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, portable child car seats, first aid kit, Indigestion tablets, diarrhoea remedy, quick dry towel, etc.

5. What about health and safety? Is it safe to travel around Myanmar with kids?

Although some places of Myanmar including the areas of Rakhine, Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Sagaing, and northern parts of Shan States are still in armed conflicts, travelers are not allowed to enter these regions.

The most popular destinations including Yangon, Bago, Kyaiktiyo, Bagan, Mandalay, Kalaw, Inle Lake, Naypyitaw, and beach areas like Ngapali, Ngwe Saung, etc., are safe enough.

However, the safety and hygienic standards of Myanmar aren’t up to the standards in the developed countries. So watch out the basic toilet facilities, uneven sidewalks, stray dogs, etc.

To dining, head for clean and busy restaurants, where completely cooked food and relatively good standards of hygiene can be ensured. And do remember to drink bottled water because the data from WHO shows 82% of Myanmar cities, towns and rural areas need to improve the water sources.
