Things Need to Know Before Planning A Cambodia Tour from Ho Chi Minh City

Yes, it’s absolutely worth it. Cambodia is just next door to Vietnam, and the journey is easy. In just a few hours, you can go from the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the peaceful temples of Angkor or the royal palaces in Phnom Penh.
Cambodia offers something very different from Vietnam. You'll see ancient temples, floating villages, and quiet countryside roads. It’s perfect if you want a short but meaningful side trip during your Vietnam tour. Many of our travelers say the Cambodia part of their journey was a big highlight.

Technically, yes—but we don’t recommend it. The border is only about 3 hours away by road, but getting there and back in one day doesn’t leave much time to enjoy Cambodia. Most people who try it only have time for lunch and a quick photo.
If you have just one day, you can visit the Cambodian border town of Bavet, but there’s not much to see. For a better experience, we suggest spending at least 2–3 days so you can explore Phnom Penh or even reach Siem Reap. A day is too short to feel the magic of Cambodia.

Depending on traffic and the time it takes to cross the border, the bus ride from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh typically takes six to seven hours. By overnight or connecting bus, it can take 12 to 14 hours to get to Siem Reap.
The majority of buses have air conditioning and meal stops. Some upscale buses even have cozy seats and Wi-Fi. We can assist you with making all the arrangements, and we advise making reservations with reputable businesses. If you want to save money and take in the scenery while traveling, this is a good option.

Where you go, how many days you stay, and the degree of comfort you desire all affect the price. A private tour may cost $250 per person for a two-day trip to Phnom Penh. A 4-day trip to Siem Reap usually costs $500–$700, including hotel, transport, guide, and entry tickets.
Luxury tours with boutique hotels or flights will cost more, but the experience is far more relaxing and smooth. We design every tour based on your needs and budget. Just tell us your travel style, and we’ll build the perfect plan for you.

Ho Chi Minh City and Angkor Wat are not connected by air. You can only get to Angkor Wat by flying to Siem Reap first. It takes about one hour and fifteen minutes to fly from Ho Chi Minh City. After arriving at Siem Reap airport, there is still a one-hour drive to Angkor Wat.
Flying to Siem Reap is the quickest & easiest way to Angkor Wat from Ho Chi Minh City. Regular flights are typically reasonably priced, particularly if you book the tickets in advance. To ensure everything runs smoothly, we'll handle temple tickets and airport pickup.

No, there is currently no direct train from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. The countries are not yet connected by rail. You would need to travel by bus or fly instead.
The best way to go is by flight—fast and comfortable. Buses are cheaper and more scenic, but they take much longer. If you’re an adventurous traveler, we can arrange a route that combines car and bus transfers with some cultural stops on the way.

Two days in Siem Reap are only enough to see the main temples, such as Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Prohm, and perhaps take in a night market or cultural Apsara performance. However, we recommend three days or longer if you want to take your time and see more than just the main attractions.
If you have one more day, you can take a boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake, go on a bike ride through the countryside, or visit Banteay Srei. However, we'll help you make the most of your time if you only have two days. Our experts are good at making smart travel plans, and you won't miss the top highlights of Siem Reap.

Yes, Phnom Penh is a great first stop if you’re coming from Ho Chi Minh City. The journey is easy by bus or car, and the city gives you a deep look into Cambodia’s modern and ancient history.
You can visit the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and important places like the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Museum. It’s emotional and eye-opening. There are also great restaurants and riverside views.
Phnom Penh is often overlooked, but we think it’s a must-see, especially for travelers interested in culture and local life. It’s also a good place to stop before heading to Siem Reap or the southern beaches.

There are three main routes to Angkor Wat (Siem Reap):
1. Fly directly: the fastest way (about 1 hour 15 minutes).
2. Bus or minivan: A long (12–14 hour) but less expensive trip.
3. Mekong River cruise from Ho Chi Minh City via Phnom Penh for around 8 days.
Generally speaking, flying is most recommended, particularly for short trips or families. However, a custom overland trip can be a great way to experience the countryside at your own pace. Tell us your thoughts, and we'll help you in selecting the option that best suits you.

An unforgettable Mekong River cruise
I will never forget my eight-day Mekong River cruise I took from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. The crew was welcoming, the food was excellent, and the room was comfortable. We visited floating markets and daily life along the delta. The best part was slowly traveling to Cambodia. Everything was handled well by the team. There was nothing for me to think.

A flexible tour ideal for our pace
Our five-day journey from Saigon to Cambodia was flawless thanks to Indochina Tour. They organized a short trip for us to see Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. We liked how they balanced more well-known sights like Angkor Wat with more personal, regional experiences like a cooking class and a village tour. We really appreciated the personal touches.
