Maria’s 15-Day Family Journey Through Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia
A three-country family trip built around the places they most wanted to see.
Maria first planned this journey with us in 2023, but the family had to put it on hold. In early 2025, she came back ready to try again, this time with four family members and a little more time to travel.
The original idea linked Hanoi, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap and Saigon. Maria then asked if Sapa could be added, along with a few more places around Hanoi. The final trip grew into 15 days, with Ninh Binh and Halong Bay added before the family continued into Laos and Cambodia.
It was an active route, with two overnight trains, several regional flights and full sightseeing days. That pace suited the family, but the itinerary still had to be rebuilt carefully around the flights that actually operated on their final dates.

How Their Journey Came Together
Maria already knew the main places she wanted to keep: Hanoi, Luang Prabang, Siem Reap and Saigon. When she returned in 2025, she asked to use the extra time for Sapa and other worthwhile stops in northern Vietnam.
The harder part was making the route work on the family’s actual dates. Regional flights did not operate every day, and the Luang Prabang to Siem Reap sector needed to be changed when the expected direct flight was unavailable.
What Ivy Worked Around
- Maria’s final 17–31 May travel dates
- Limited flight days between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia
- Extra time in northern Vietnam without dropping Luang Prabang or Angkor
Maria2025/1/30“My family and I are now planning to travel this May. We will be four. We want to add two days in Hanoi. We are thinking of Sapa and other places you can suggest.”
"I added Sapa, Ninh Binh and Halong Bay, then rebuilt the route around the flights available on the family’s final dates.
When the direct Luang Prabang to Siem Reap flight was not available, I moved the transfer to a day with the workable connection via Pakse so they could still keep both destinations."
IvyTravel ExpertThe Journey They Finally Took
The finished trip kept Maria’s original must-see places and added more of northern Vietnam. Most sightseeing was private, with local guides and drivers meeting the family in each destination. The Halong Bay cruise and Living Land Farm were shared experiences.
The route moved often, but each stop felt different: mountain villages in Sapa, limestone scenery in Ninh Binh and Halong Bay, temples and waterfalls in Luang Prabang, Angkor in Siem Reap, then the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi in southern Vietnam.

Moments They Remembered Most
The photos tell a different part of the story from the itinerary. Some moments were the famous places they had come to see. Others were much simpler: planting rice, cooling off near a waterfall or spending time with the guides who looked after them along the way.
SIEM REAP · CAMBODIA
Angkor Was Erica’s Favorite Part
Erica later said the guided visit to Angkor Wat was the best moment of the whole trip. During their full day in Siem Reap, the family explored Angkor Thom, Bayon, Ta Prohm and Angkor Wat with their local guide, Mr. Vantha.
What stood out in her review was not only the temples. She also mentioned how knowledgeable Mr. Vantha was and how welcome he made the family feel in Cambodia. That is the kind of detail that rarely appears in an itinerary, but often shapes how a day is remembered.
LUANG PRABANG · LAOS
Trying Rice Farming for Themselves
On their last full day in Luang Prabang, the family swapped sightseeing for a morning at Living Land Farm. They learned how rice is grown and joined part of the process themselves, stepping into the paddies and planting by hand.
It was a small change of pace after several days of temples and touring. The experience also gave them something more personal to take away from Laos: not just another place they had seen, but something they had actually tried.
LUANG PRABANG · LAOS
A Break at Kuang Si
The day began on the Mekong, with a boat trip to Pak Ou Caves. Later, the family continued to Kuang Si Waterfall, where the setting changed completely from river villages and caves to forest paths and clear turquoise pools.
Their photo feels very different from the temple images elsewhere in the trip. That contrast was one reason the Luang Prabang section worked well: the family had cultural visits, river scenery and a little time outdoors rather than spending every day on the same kind of sightseeing.
LUANG PRABANG · LAOS
Seeing More Than One Side of Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang was not treated as a one-temple stop. The family spent a full day visiting the Royal Palace area, Wat Sene, Wat Xiengthong, Wat Visoun, Wat Aham and Wat Mai, with time for local cultural sites in between.
That slower look at the city helped balance the faster travel days elsewhere in the itinerary. Instead of rushing through one landmark and moving on, they had time to see how the old town, Buddhist sites and local life fit together.
THE PEOPLE ALONG THE WAY
The Guides They Remembered
Erica’s review makes it clear that the people mattered as much as the places. She specifically mentioned Mr. Vantha in Cambodia and Ms. Mang Tan in Sapa, and thanked the wider team for helping the family throughout the trip.
That is also why this photo belongs in the story. A good guide does more than explain a monument. They help with the small things, answer questions as they come up and make a new place feel easier to understand. For a 15-day trip across three countries, that continuity mattered.
What They Said After the Trip
“They are exceptionally helpful and nice all throughout the process... definitely a 10/10 for us.”
“The guided tour in Angkor Wat was just too majestic and surreal. It was the best moment on our trip.”
What stood out to Erica
She also praised the Sapa village experience with guide Ms. Mang Tan and thanked Ivy and Helen for helping with the tour details and communication before the trip.
