A 20-Day Southeast Asia Trip Designed Around Four Friends
Four travelers, four countries and a private journey shaped around culture, nature and time to slow down.
Sharon came to us through a personal recommendation while rethinking a cruise trip that was not giving the group enough time in Southeast Asia. She and Leonard were traveling with Al and Jennifer, and the four of them wanted the main sights, local culture, nature and a comfortable finish by the beach.
What started as a roughly two-week idea became a 20-day private journey from Singapore to Phuket. Along the way, Ivy compared hotels and room types, added a rest day in Siem Reap, adjusted the elephant experience and kept several days free in Phuket.
After the trip, Sharon called it a “Trip of a lifetime”. She also gave useful feedback on the pace, which is exactly the kind of detail we use when tailoring future trips.

How Their Journey Came Together
Sharon’s first idea was much smaller: leave the cruise in Cambodia, see Angkor, then rejoin near Ho Chi Minh City. The more she looked at the timing, the less comfortable it felt.
She then asked Ivy to start again with four active travelers in mind. The new brief was simple: Southeast Asia highlights, good hotels, nature and enough downtime to enjoy the trip.
What Ivy Worked Around
- Changing from a cruise stop to a full private journey
- Two couples arriving in Singapore on different flights
- Specific hotel, room and non-smoking requests
- Keeping the highlights while adding real rest time
Sharon Jan 2026“We are wanting a mixture of the main sights, with nature and relaxation.”
I rebuilt the trip as a private four-country journey instead of trying to fit everything around the cruise. Singapore was added at the beginning and Phuket became the slower finish.
We also worked through the hotels carefully, adjusted room categories for each couple and kept a free day in Siem Reap when Sharon felt the pace needed a break.
Ivy Travel ConsultantThe Journey They Finally Took
By January, the four of them had a route that felt far removed from the original cruise idea. Singapore gave everyone time to arrive and settle in. Hanoi brought city history and local performance, while Bai Tu Long Bay gave them a night away from traffic and airports.
Then came two full Angkor days, a deliberate day off in Siem Reap, Bangkok and Ayutthaya, street food and elephants in Chiang Mai, and finally Phuket. After the Phi Phi outing, the last three days were left completely open.

What Sharon Remembered Most
When Sharon looked back on the trip, a few experiences came up straight away: the water puppet show in Hanoi, the Apsara performance in Cambodia and the elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai. She also loved the snorkeling near Phi Phi, even though the busy boat and island were not quite her style.
Her own photos add some quieter memories too: time together in Hanoi, a morning coffee looking out over the bay, and the Singapore stop that gave the group a gentler start before the longer journey began.
HANOI · VIETNAM
A Hanoi Moment Away From the Big Sights
This photo was taken beside Hanoi’s railway tracks, with cafés, lights and the narrow line running straight through the neighborhood behind them. It is a much more everyday scene than the pagodas and monuments they visited during the day.
Hanoi gave the group several of those smaller local moments. They rode through the Old Quarter by cyclo and ended the sightseeing day with a traditional water puppet show. Sharon later singled that performance out as one of her favorite experiences from the entire journey.
CHIANG MAI · THAILAND
The Day Sharon Did Not Want to Shorten
During planning, Sharon noticed that the elephant visit had become shorter and asked Ivy whether they could keep a longer experience. It mattered enough to the group that they discussed it before paying the deposit.
The visit stayed in the final plan. At Elephant Nature Park, they learned about rescued animals and spent time near the elephants without riding them. Sharon later listed the sanctuary among her favorite activities, so this was one adjustment that clearly earned its place in the itinerary.
BAI TU LONG BAY · VIETNAM
Morning Coffee on the Bay
The previous afternoon had been more active, with kayaking around Cap La Island, sunset on deck and an overnight stay aboard the cruise. By morning, the mood was quieter.
The itinerary left time to sit on deck with tea or coffee before visiting Thien Canh Son Cave and returning to Hanoi. Sharon’s photo catches that part of the trip perfectly: nothing scheduled in the frame, just a cup of coffee and limestone islands in the morning light.
SINGAPORE
Three Nights Before the Journey Really Got Busy
Singapore became more than another city on the list. The two couples arrived on different flights, so starting here gave everyone time to meet up, recover from the journey and begin together rather than rushing straight into sightseeing.
The first full day was left free. Touring came the following day, including Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion area and Chinatown. That extra space at the beginning mattered, especially before a route that would soon involve several flights and frequent changes of city.
What They Said After the Trip
“Trip of a lifetime! Well worth the effort to get to SE Asia.”
“We had fantastic guides, full of knowledge. We saw so many interesting sites, experienced the local culture. Everything ran smoothly.”
“Hotels were 5 Star! Unbelievable service.”
What Sharon Said During Planning
“We appreciate your opinion and recommendations.” She wrote this while comparing hotels and room options with Ivy before confirming the trip.
