Inle Lake Tourist Attractions

Let’s Start Planning My Trip

1. Phaungdawoo Pagoda

The Phaungdawoo Pagoda is the holiest religious site in Southern Shan State and the most recognized shrines in Myanmar. In Burmese, the name “Phaungdawoo” means “front of the raft”. Within the pagoda, there are five ancient Buddha images which were believed to be donated by King Alaung Sithu. And the pagoda was built in order to protect these five Buddha images.

The Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival, as one of the largest religious festivals in Myanamr will take place in the pagoda every year in September or October. During the festival, four of the Buddha images are paraded around the lake in an ornate barge. The rest of the images are left in the pagoda to guard the place. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to see that the local families bring their children as part of the ordination rites for the sangha.

2. Nga Hpe Kyaung

Located on the western side of the lake, the Nga Hpe Kyaung is a beautiful wooden monastery built four years before the Mandalay Palace at eh end of the 1850s. It is built in a wood structure eon stilts over the lake. There is a huge wooden meditation hall houses an impressive collection of Buddha images in the Shan, Tibetan, Bagan and Inwa styles, which are displayed on the ornate wood and mosaic pedestals.

It is called locally as Jumping Cat Monastery. That is because there are cats trained to jump through the hoops by the monks. Tourists can treat the cats with food and the cats will be happy to present you a better show. It is well worth a visit on your way back or to the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda.

3. Floating Gardens

Inle Lake is about 14 miles long and 7 miles wide at its most expansive. Situated about 2900ft above sea level and bordered on eithe side by mountains which bring frequent rains to the lake. People live in here have no land to plant but on the lake, which makes the floating gardens. If you ‘re accustomed to gardening on dry land, then you will be surprisingly eye-opening.

There are roughly 25 % of the lake surface is covered by the floating gardens. The Intha farmers grow flowers, fruit and vegetables like tomatoes, squash. They use long bamboo poles to tie the land down to the bottom of the lake. It is a unique style of aquaculture which you have rare chance to see in other countries.
