Karl’s Family 28-Day Journey from Vietnam to Bali
A private family journey across five countries, planned with time to settle in.
Karl began planning well over a year before departure. He wanted to explore Indochina with his wife, Sylvia, and his brother, Otto, with comfortable hotels and someone to turn to when questions came up.
Together with Elena, they worked through the practical details: a rest day after the long flight, two rooms close together, enough time for Angkor and a route that finished in Bali. Their 28-day journey would take them through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand before continuing to Indonesia.
Some arrangements changed along the way. Flight schedules reshaped the route, and hotel availability meant reviewing alternatives before booking. During the trip, the family also had to cancel their planned bay cruise and stay longer in Hanoi. Kea helped coordinate the change so they could continue toward Hoi An. Their photos capture other parts of the journey, from cyclo rides in Hanoi to temple visits and rice terraces in Bali.

How Their Journey Came Together
Karl's first enquiry left the group size open. By the time they booked, the party was settled as Karl, Sylvia and Otto, with practical questions about rest time, nearby rooms, days at Angkor and who to contact if plans changed.
Elena added a free day in Hanoi, arranged two adjacent rooms where possible, timed Vietnam before Tet, replaced Myanmar with Bali, and adjusted flights.
What Elena Worked Around
- Three adults sharing the journey but needing two rooms
- A recovery day after the international flight
- Enough time for Angkor and flexibility over demanding activities
- Regional flights connecting five countries
- Hotel alternatives when preferred properties were unavailable
KarlDuring planning“As we are traveling a great distance we would like to add a ‘rest day’ to the beginning of the trip to help us get over our jet lag.”
“I’ve added a free day in Hanoi on Day 2 to help you recover from jet lag. You’ll be staying in the Old Quarter, a very convenient area with easy access to shops, restaurants, and cultural spots.”
ElenaTravel ExpertThe Journey They Took
The family started in Hanoi, with a day to recover before exploring the city. Their photos show the three of them together at the Temple of Literature and riding cyclos through the streets.
The planned overnight bay cruise was cancelled during the trip. They stayed an additional night in Hanoi, with arrangements revised around the following day’s flight to Da Nang and transfer to Hoi An.
From there, the route continued south to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, then across to Siem Reap. Two full sightseeing days allowed time for Angkor’s temples and Tonle Sap, followed by craft visits before flying to Laos.
Luang Prabang came next, then northern Thailand and Bangkok. Bali was the final stop. Although it was intended as a comfortable finish, the itinerary there still included several full excursion days, with temples, rice terraces and an island trip.

Memories from Their Journey
The family’s photos bring us back to Hanoi and Bali: three travelers sharing a cyclo outing, stopping for a picture beneath old trees and standing beside rice terraces. Between those stops, their route made time for Angkor, Luang Prabang and northern Thailand.
VIETNAM · HANOI
Seeing the Old Quarter by Cyclo
Karl, Sylvia and Otto’s Hanoi photos include a cyclo outing, with the three of them seated in separate rickshaws and ready to go. It was part of their city day after a free day to rest.
The itinerary brought together Tran Quoc Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and Hoan Kiem Lake before the Old Quarter ride. A water puppet performance was arranged for the evening. Starting with that extra day in Hanoi meant they could settle in before taking on a full sightseeing schedule.
CAMBODIA · SIEM REAP
Giving Angkor More Time
Karl asked whether one day would be enough for Angkor. The family might never return, and he wanted to feel they had given it enough time.
The itinerary allowed two full sightseeing days in Siem Reap. One covered Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei, with a spa appointment afterward. The next combined Angkor Wat with Tonle Sap. The plan also left the family free to skip steep climbs while continuing with the rest of the visit.
LAOS · LUANG PRABANG
Cooling Off at Kuang Si
In Luang Prabang, the day began with a shared visit to Living Land Farm, where the family learned how rice is grown and tried parts of the process with the farm team.
The afternoon continued to the bear rescue sanctuary and Kuang Si Waterfall. Their photo shows the turquoise limestone pools beneath the forest canopy—a quieter pause after the morning’s hands-on work, before a Lao-style spa appointment later in the day.
THAILAND · CHIANG RAI
Continuing North Before Bangkok
The Thailand section gave the family time in both Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. From their Chiang Mai base, the plan included city temples and a shared elephant excursion before continuing north by road.
Chiang Rai added another overnight stop before the Golden Triangle day. Elena arranged the Bangkok flight for later that day, so the family could travel with their luggage and go directly to the airport after sightseeing. It avoided returning to Chiang Mai simply to catch the next flight.
INDONESIA · BALI
A Stop Beside the Rice Terraces
One of the family’s Bali photos shows them beside stepped rice fields, with palms and greenery rising behind them. Tegalalang Rice Terrace was included in their itinerary on a day through the Ubud and Kintamani areas.
That day also brought a Barong dance performance, a visit to Celuk’s craft workshops and Tirta Empul. It was a busy outing, so travelers following a similar route could choose fewer stops and spend longer at the places that interest them most.
INDONESIA · UBUD
Together at the Monkey Forest
The family stopped for a photo beside the Monkey Forest entrance, framed by large tree roots and dense greenery. Ubud Monkey Forest was included in the same part of the itinerary as the rice terraces.
By this stage, they had traveled through four countries before reaching Bali. The photographs here show them still exploring together, from the forest entrance to temple courtyards and mountain viewpoints.
INDONESIA · BALI
Temples and Water Palaces at the End of the Journey
Bali had been on Karl and Sylvia’s list for some time. Their photos include a temple visit in sarongs and a quiet stop beside a water palace, with pools and a pavilion behind them.
The east Bali itinerary included Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung, followed by Virgin Beach. These were long touring days from their hotel, so the final stay combined comfortable accommodation with plenty of sightseeing. A slower version could keep the temple visits and leave another day free.
From Planning to Sharing Their Journey
“I submitted it to Tripadvisor. Include 10 photos along with my review.”
Karl’s emails show how much he appreciated the care Elena put into the family’s itinerary. After reviewing the updated plan, he wrote, “I've reviewed everything in the updated PDF and it looks fine.” As departure approached, he referred to the trip as “our adventure that you have so carefully planned for us.”
After returning home, Karl let Elena know that he had submitted a Tripadvisor review along with 10 photos. When it had not yet appeared online, he offered to submit it again. His message sits alongside a family photo here, adding a personal follow-up to the journey they had spent months planning together.

Would a Journey Like This Suit You?
This route suits adults traveling together who want a broad introduction to Southeast Asia and have about four weeks available. Private guiding handles much of the daily coordination, while free days in Hanoi and Hoi An provide breaks between touring.
It still involves seven regional flights, frequent hotel changes and some long excursions. Bali, in particular, would need fewer scheduled visits if your main aim were to rest by the pool or beach.
A good fit if you...
- Have about four weeks
- Travel with adult family
- Enjoy temples and markets
- Want guides for sightseeing
- Like hotels with free time
We would adjust it if you...
- Prefer fewer flights
- Need easier walking days
- Want longer in one country
- Want every activity private
- Prefer a quiet Bali stay
