Suresh & Krithika’s 34-Day Journey Through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos & Thailand
A couple’s four-country private journey, with a very happy ending.
Suresh and Krithika had already spent time researching Southeast Asia when they contacted Elena. They wanted to travel together through four countries, learning about their history and spending time in villages and local workshops. They also wanted to get outdoors. Both were vegetarian, so having a choice of places to eat mattered.
They began with a 30-day Vietnam Thailand Cambodia Laos tour itinerary and worked through it with Elena, adding places and experiences they had hoped to include. The finished journey lasted 34 days, from Hanoi to Bangkok. There were mountain walks in Sapa, lantern making near Hoi An, a detour to Kratie for dolphin watching and a balloon flight planned over Vang Vieng.
Lance looked after the booking arrangements and helped with requests during the trip. Back home, the couple said they were “very happy with the results” and thanked both colleagues for keeping everything running smoothly.

How Their Journey Came Together
Suresh’s first request was for a 30-day tour of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. He and Krithika had their own list of places to see and wanted to check it against the proposal, city by city.
As they talked through the route, more of their plans took shape. Sapa and Hue were added, along with Ninh Binh, Vientiane and Vang Vieng. Elena changed the bay cruise so it would include Vung Vieng Floating Village. She also explained why adding Ha Giang and Dong Van would mean another four or five days on rough mountain roads. They left those out.
Near the end of planning, the couple asked about three more experiences: an incense village, a basket boat ride and Silk Island. Elena fitted them into days already on the route, explaining where an earlier start or a longer day would be needed. After reviewing the changes together, Suresh and Krithika were ready to book.
What Elena Worked Around
- A detailed wish list across four countries
- Extra destinations within the couple’s travel dates
- Vegetarian preferences and freedom to choose meals
- Village visits and workshops fitted around transfers
- Private touring combined with selected group activities
SureshDuring Planning“Primary interests are around history, culture and immersion, outdoor activities including hiking and cycling.”
The incense village became a stop on the Ninh Binh day. Cam Thanh’s basket boats and lantern making were arranged before the flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Silk Island fitted into the Phnom Penh departure day, with an early hotel start.
For meals, the couple preferred to choose most lunches and dinners themselves. Elena kept that flexibility and explained where meals remained part of a cruise or evening program. Local guides could help them find restaurants suited to their vegetarian preferences.
ElenaSenior Travel ConsultantThe Journey They Finally Took
Their route gave Vietnam nearly two weeks, from Hanoi and Sapa to Hue, Hoi An and the Mekong Delta. Cambodia followed, with Angkor’s temples and a longer journey east to Kratie before Phnom Penh.
In Laos, the plan moved from Vientiane to Vang Vieng, then north by train to Luang Prabang. Farm visits and traditional crafts sat alongside temples and river trips. The last part of the journey brought them to Chiang Mai and Bangkok, with excursions to Chiang Rai, Kanchanaburi and Ayutthaya.
It was a full month of travel, with two overnight trains, several flights and some long drives. Most core sightseeing was private. The bay cruise, rice-farming experience and selected Thailand activities were shared with other travelers.

Experiences That Shaped Their Route
Suresh and Krithika’s itinerary made room for the places and activities they had researched together. Around Hoi An, that meant exploring the old town and riding a basket boat through coconut palms. In Laos, they chose a rice-farming experience. Their requests also took the route to Bangkok’s riverfront and the dolphin grounds near Kratie.
VIETNAM · HOI AN
A Small Lane in Hoi An
Yellow walls, hanging lanterns and a lane barely wide enough for two: this photo captures Suresh and Krithika together during their time in Hoi An. Their old-town itinerary included historic houses and the market, with time to visit tailor shops.
They had also asked for My Son Sanctuary and a lantern-making class. With those visits arranged across their stay, Hoi An gave them time to explore both the area’s history and the crafts still practiced there.
VIETNAM · CAM THANH
A Basket Boat Ride Before Moving On
The couple specifically asked to include a basket boat ride at Cam Thanh. Here they are aboard one of the round boats, wearing conical hats, with coconut palms and brightly painted boats behind them.
Elena fitted the visit into their final day in the Hoi An area. The plan paired time on the waterways with a lantern-making workshop before their flight to Ho Chi Minh City, keeping both requested experiences in the journey.
LAOS · LUANG PRABANG
Trying Rice Farming by Hand
The rice-farming experience at Living Land Farm suited the couple’s interest in local life and outdoor activities. Their itinerary included a shared session with the farm team to learn how rice is grown and try parts of the work themselves.
Planting seedlings means stepping into a flooded paddy and working close to the soil, as this image shows. After the farm visit, their day continued to the bear rescue sanctuary and Kuang Si Waterfall.
THAILAND · BANGKOK
Seeing Bangkok from the River
A sunset cruise on the Chao Phraya was on Suresh and Krithika’s wish list. Elena arranged it near the end of their journey, following a day of visits to Bangkok’s royal temples.
The dinner cruise gave them a seated evening after sightseeing, with views of the riverfront from the water. This image shows the setting for that part of the itinerary: a boat on the river, warm evening light and Wat Arun illuminated on the opposite bank.
CAMBODIA · KRATIE
Making Time for the River Dolphins
The chance to see Irrawaddy dolphins was the reason Suresh and Krithika wanted to include Kratie. Reaching it meant a seven- to eight-hour drive from Siem Reap, so their route allowed two nights before continuing to Phnom Penh.
The day between those drives included a small-boat trip to the dolphin grounds near Kampi, followed by a visit to Koh Trong Island. The dolphin pictured here illustrates what they hoped to see; sightings on the river depend on conditions.
