Let’s Start Planning My Trip

1. The Bund

The Bund is regarded as the renowned symbol and landmark in Shanghai for hundreds years. The street was paved there after shanghai was established as the trading port in 1846 and then rows of commercial buildings were constructed along the street. Consulates of most countries and many banks, businesses and newspaper offices began to settle and that’s why there are various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classical and Renaissance.

At the junction of Nanjing Road is the commemorative square with a fountain and a statue of Chen Yi, who was the first mayor of Shanghai in 1949 in the communist era. And opposite the Customs Building is a waterfall clock which can show time in various cities all over the world. It was surrounded by Chinese wisterias, gingko trees, and azaleas. It is worth to take your time to see the Bund at night with the lamp-posts, colorful lights floating on the river and flashing lights on the other sides of the river.

2. Nanjing Road

As China’s leading shopping street, Nanjing Road enjoys a length of 3.4 mile (around 6 km), starting at the eastern Bund and ends in the west at the junction of Jing’an Temple and Yan’an West Street. Serving as a must-see destination in Shanghai, it attracts thousands of visitors daily.

As early as in the middle of the nineteenth century, just after the Opium War, Nanjing Road became the earliest shopping street of the city for imported large quantities of foreign goods. After that, it has been undertaken several significant reconstruction and repair. An all-time pedestrian arcade was built on the eastern end, and modern shopping malls, specialty stores, theatres, and international hotels have mushroomed on both sides of the street. In addition, traditional stores still have a place on the road.

3. Yuyuan Garden

Yuyuan Garden is the only surviving garden built in Ming Dynasty, which is located in the center of Shanghai's Old City, a few blocks south of the Bund. A government officer named Pan Yuanduan built it as the residence for his parents to enjoy their happy old age in 1559. Went through about 400 years, the garden have been damaged badly for several times and the appearance tourists see today was the result of the five years of restoration project in 1956 and another repair during 1986 to 1993.

Covered an area of 20,000 square meters, the garden boasts more than forty deftly designed ancient constructions. The first thing you will see when you entering the garden is a rockery, called the Great Rockery. On the top of the rockery, you can get a bird's eye view of the garden. Yuyuan Garden is the place used to hold a lot of activities, such as flower exhibitions, stone exhibitions, painting exhibitions and so on.
