Wat Rong Khun or the White Temple in Chiang Rai is unique and different from other temples in Thailand. It was built recently and the whole building is held in white, which regarded as a symbol for “Buddha’s purity”.

The temple was designed and supervised by a Thailand famous artist Ajarm Chalermchai Kositpipat with nation, religion and the king as his inspiration to build this temple. Out of respect for him, a gallery exhibiting his paintings are built nearby the temple for tourists to appreciate. It is now a national landmark in the north Thailand and a popular destination among tourists from all over the world.

2. Wat Phra Kaew

At the beginning, it was called Wat Pa Yia, which means Bamboo Forest Monastery in local dialect. It is a third-common-class royal temple situated in Chiang Rai City where once housed the “Emerald Buddha”, the most reversed Buddha image. Thus it is of great importance to the history of Thailand.

The pagoda was built in Lanna-style and had been renovated for several times. It is the place Emerald Buddha was found in 1434. The main prayer hall was formerly a Vihara or a assembly hall built in 1890. It is a medium sized and well preserved wooden structure with 9.50 metres in width and 21.85 in length. Within the temple, there is a Saengkaew Museum where display plenty of interesting objects of the typical northern culture of Thailand. Besides, there are also the personal belongings of two respected late Monks.

3. Golden Triangle and Hall of Opium

Golden Triangle is a famous attraction in Chiang Rai, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. In the past, it was a place where opium was grown widely and it was common that most of the people living in the area planted, sold or smoked opium. But it no longer exists in this area. The intersection where the borders of the three countries converge is called Sob-Ruak Village.

The Hall of Opium is located in the Golden Triangle area where exhibits the history of opium in this area including the origin, the opium war, how the people made living on planting and smoking opium, as well as an enormous collection of old opium pipes, weights and scales, and other drug paraphernalia.
