Jill & Eric's 13-Day Vietnam and Cambodia Journey
A private journey for two, shaped by curiosity and remembered with affection.
Jill and Eric were traveling a long way from the United States, and they wanted to make the most of it. Their interests ranged from Hanoi’s French Quarter and the Cu Chi Tunnels to Hue’s imperial history, Hoi An’s market and the temples of Angkor.
Working with Elena, they kept refining the details: adding Hue, choosing the Hai Van Pass route, asking for an early visit to My Son and making room for a food tour they had received as a gift. Private guides and drivers helped connect the different stops, while Lance coordinated the practical arrangements.
After the trip, Jill called it a “Trip of a Lifetime.” Her review praised the team’s flexibility, and her follow-up feedback was especially warm about Cambodia. Looking back, she would have liked at least one more day in Siem Reap.

How Their Journey Came Together
Jill wanted to feel the places she visited, not simply move through a list of sights. With only one full day in Hanoi, she asked for the Old Quarter, French Quarter and a stop at the Metropole, while keeping the late afternoon clear for a gifted food tour. Elena explained the timing choices and the need to leave out the water puppet show if they kept that booking.
Other requests shaped the route too. Hue was added for its history, the road to Hoi An went via the Hai Van Pass, and Jill asked for more market time and an early visit to My Son. Elena and Lance continued working through the changes, including hotel preferences and the connection between the bay cruise and the flight to Hue.
JillDuring planning“We hope to be able to get a feeling for the city which is why we don’t care about museums.”
“Let’s plan the Hanoi day around the neighborhoods you want to see and your 4 p.m. food tour. We’ll need to leave out the puppet show, then work the other stops around the time you have.”
ElenaSenior Travel ConsultantThe Journey They Took
The route linked Hanoi and an overnight bay cruise with Hue and Hoi An, then continued south to Ho Chi Minh City before crossing into Cambodia. Jill and Eric had private guides and drivers for their land touring, with flights connecting the main regions.
The central Vietnam section grew out of Jill’s questions about Hue. Elena added the city and arranged the onward drive through the Hai Van Pass. During the trip, Jill emailed from Hue to say that they loved their hotel and that changing the cruise-day pickup point to the airport had been a good decision.
Siem Reap was the final main stop before their return connection through Hanoi. Their photos show Angkor at sunrise and the couple together beneath the roots at Ta Prohm. In her review, Jill said they could have used at least another day there.

Experiences That Shaped Their Route
The details Jill asked about during planning show what interested the couple: historic streets, imperial sites, market time and temple visits. Their own photos capture the Cambodia days, while the emails explain how the Vietnam route took shape.
VIETNAM · HANOI
Making One Day Count
Jill and Eric had one full day in Hanoi. Jill wanted the Old Quarter and French Quarter, a stop at the Metropole and time around Hoan Kiem Lake. She also had a gifted food tour booked from 4 to 7 p.m.
Elena explained that the water puppet show would not fit alongside that booking. The planning conversation became a choice about how to spend a short stay: Jill wanted time in the city’s streets and neighborhoods, and the day needed to end in time for the food tour.
VIETNAM · HUE AND THE HAI VAN PASS
Giving Hue Its Own Place in the Journey
Before booking, Jill asked whether Hue was worth a visit in its own right. Elena added time there and explained how it would connect with Hoi An. The onward road journey was arranged through the Hai Van Pass at Jill’s request.
The hotel choice mattered too. Elena changed the Hue booking to Silk Path Grand, and Jill’s message from the city began, “We absolutely love this hotel.” It is a small but direct glimpse of how a planning decision felt once they were there.
VIETNAM · HOI AN AND MY SON
More Time for the Market
Jill asked to spend longer at Hoi An’s market and to add a sunrise visit to My Son. Elena extended the evening guide arrangement and explained that the early temple outing would mean waking around 4:30 a.m. and asking the hotel for a packed breakfast.
Those requests show the pace the couple chose. They wanted to use the time they had, even when it meant an early start. Hoi An’s streets and market brought a different part of central Vietnam into the itinerary alongside Hue’s history.
CAMBODIA · ANGKOR
The Sun Above Angkor
Jill’s photo catches the sun low above Angkor, with the temple towers and sky reflected in the water. It gives the Cambodia part of the journey a clear opening image.
Angkor had been part of the couple’s plans from the beginning, when they asked to add two sightseeing days in Siem Reap. After returning home, Jill felt they could have used at least one more day there, a useful thought for anyone planning a similar route.
CAMBODIA · TA PROHM
Together Beneath the Roots
In another photograph, Jill and Eric stand together beside a doorway almost enclosed by huge tree roots. They are looking upward at the way the roots wrap around the old stonework.
The image brings the scale of Ta Prohm into the story more directly than a list of temples could. It also gives the page a personal moment from a couple who had traveled far and wanted to see as much of the region as they could.
CAMBODIA · SIEM REAP
A Hotel They Remembered Warmly
Jill had asked to change their Siem Reap hotel to Viroth’s before departure. In her feedback afterward, she called it “a gem of an oasis in the middle of Siem Reap” and “a very special place.”
She also praised the Cambodia guide, the restaurants and a massage. These details explain why the final stop stayed with her. Her suggestion to add another day in Siem Reap makes sense alongside that warm account of the stay.
What Jill Said After the Journey
“Elena and Lance were flexible in tweaking the itinerary as we read more and more about the region.”
“We would definitely recommend the services of Indochina Tours”
Trip of a Lifetime
Jill gave the journey five stars and praised Elena and Lance for adapting the itinerary as she and Eric learned more about the region. She described a wonderful experience with private guides and drivers, and said they would recommend Indochina Tours.
Her review was candid about the pace: they moved around a lot because they had traveled so far and wanted to see as much as possible. The change she would make was to allow at least another day in Siem Reap.

Would a Journey Like This Suit You?
This route suits couples who want a broad first journey through Vietnam and Cambodia and enjoy history, architecture and exploring with private guides. It involves several changes of base, flights and early starts rather than long stays in each place.
Jill’s own advice would improve a similar trip: allow more time in Siem Reap. Hotel preferences and the kind of local excursions you enjoy are also worth discussing early, especially if you have traveled widely and prefer fewer shopping stops.
A good fit if you...
- Want to see northern, central and southern Vietnam alongside Angkor
- Enjoy historic streets, imperial sites and temple visits
- Prefer private guides and drivers for land sightseeing
- Are comfortable with flights and frequent changes of base
We would adjust it if you...
- Prefer several nights in each hotel
- Want fewer early starts or shorter sightseeing days
- Have specific hotel brands or room standards in mind
- Want an extra day in Siem Reap
